The wine industry and market is one that is ever growing and ever changing. The consumers’ market for wine has grown substantially large in, “...total US wine sales were $62.7 billion in 2017, with $41.8 billion in sales from domestic wine and $20.9 billion from imports.” (Thach 2018 p. 1) With so much demand for wine and so many wines on the shelves of every grocery store, each boasting new bottles, labels, exotic flavours, longer aging periods, and unique growing locations, it can be difficult for one wine to stand out above the rest. How can a winemaker constantly keep up with all these new standards to sell the most product? Instead of trying to answer this question, the winemakers at Bunker Hill Vineyard & Winery take a different, and far more simple approach to crafting the perfect glass of wine. Instead of channeling the flashy new trends of the wine industry, Bunker Hill focuses on sustaining the rustic flavour of the grape all the way from vine to wine.

Bunker Hill’s main focus in wine making is to preserve the natural and fragrant taste of the grape throughout the winemaking process. Rather than importing foreign grapes, Bunker Hill uses grapes that are “...locally grown on our own vines and have their roots buried deeply in the sandy soils of eastern Manatee County, Florida.” (Bunker Hill p. 1) The variety of grapes that Bunker Hill grows are collectively called muscadine grapes. Many wine connoisseurs turn their noses up to the simplicity of muscadine wine, regarding it as something “red-necks” would consume. However, Bunker Hill sees muscadine wine in a different way, they value its simplicity, rusticness, and deep flavour. “We are ‘NOT’ driven by the mantra of wine clarity, but, rather by the taste, bouquet and flavor of the grape.” (Bunker Hill p. 1) This statement is what sets Bunker Hill apart from other winemakers and draws customers to purchase their wines, they disregard the flashy trends and competition, and instead focus on the authenticity of their simple product.
